The HPL Series is Motovario’s modular range of industrial planetary gear reducers, designed in 2022 for drives that need high torque density and low rotational speed. It comes in 12 sizes, inline (HL) and bevel helical (HB) versions with one to four reduction stages, a choice of solid, splined and hollow outputs, and foot, flange or shaft mounting.

HPL Series overview

Planetary gearboxes share the load between several planet gears running around a central sun gear, which gives very high torque in a compact, coaxial package. The HPL Series uses a nitrided steel ring gear, case-hardened sun and planet gears, and high-strength spheroidal cast iron output modules optimised with FEM analysis. Gear load capacity is calculated to ISO 6336 and bearings to ISO 281.

The range runs in 12 sizes, from size 010 at 1,250Nm to size 1000 at 100,000Nm nominal output torque, with one to four reduction stages and ratios from around 3:1 up to 3,000:1. It is built in two layouts: HL inline (coaxial) and HB bevel helical, for right-angle drives. Each is available with an IEC or NEMA motor flange (HL/HB), a motor flange with flexible coupling (PHL/PHB), a solid input shaft (IHL/IHB) or as a compact geared motor (CHL/CHB), and the input modules are shared with Motovario’s HBS series.

Outputs include a keyed solid shaft, a splined solid shaft to DIN 5482, a splined hollow shaft, a hollow shaft with shrink disc and a wheel flange, with output shafts up to 120mm on sizes up to 380. Units can be foot mounted, flange mounted or shaft mounted, and NBR output seals are standard, with VR or VRM reinforced seals on request. The VP version pairs an HPL planetary stage with a Motovario NMRV worm first stage for very high ratios, with a torque limiter option.

Features and benefits

  • High torque density – 12 sizes, from 1,250Nm to 100,000Nm nominal output torque, in a compact planetary design.
  • 1 to 4 reduction stages – ratios up to 3,000:1 for low output speeds.
  • Inline or right-angle – HL coaxial and HB bevel helical versions.
  • Four input options – IEC or NEMA motor flange, flange with flexible coupling, solid input shaft or compact geared motor.
  • Choice of outputs – keyed solid, splined solid (DIN 5482), splined hollow, hollow with shrink disc or wheel flange.
  • Foot, flange or shaft mounted – with torque arm, backstop, VR or VRM reinforced seals and wheel flange available.
  • Robust construction – nitrided steel ring gear, case-hardened gears and spheroidal cast iron output modules.
  • Vertical mounting without forced lubrication – an expansion tank handles vertical positions.
  • Made in Italy – manufactured at Motovario’s Formigine and Ubersetto plants near Modena.

HPL Series FAQs

Drives that need high torque at low output speed in a compact space. Motovario lists cranes and lifts, thickeners, solar trackers, crushers, conveyor belts and mixers among typical HPL applications.

HL is the inline (coaxial) version, with input and output on the same axis. HB adds a bevel helical stage to turn the drive through 90 degrees for right-angle layouts.

Yes. With a splined hollow shaft or a hollow shaft with shrink disc, the unit mounts directly on the driven shaft and is restrained by a torque arm. Foot and flange mounted versions are also available.

HPL units run in an oil bath and are normally supplied without oil, to be filled on installation, unless a factory fill is ordered. Vertical mounting positions use an expansion tank, so forced lubrication is not needed.

A version of the HPL range that uses a Motovario NMRV worm gearbox as the first stage, ahead of the planetary stages. It gives very high ratios in a compact unit, in sizes VP P613 to VP P1183, with a torque limiter option. See the NMRV worm gearbox page for the worm range.

Motovario manufactures the HPL Series at its Formigine and Ubersetto plants in the Modena area of Italy.
