Who are Invertek Drives?

Invertek Drives Ltd was founded in 1998 and designs and manufactures its Optidrive range at its own facility at Offa’s Dyke Business Park in Welshpool, Powys. As a British manufacturer specialising in variable frequency drives and motor-control technology, Invertek supplies its products to customers in around 80 countries worldwide. In 2025, Invertek was recognised with the King’s Award for Enterprise: International Trade, recognising the company’s international growth and success.

Invertek Drives is part of Sumitomo Heavy Industries (SHI) and operates within the Sumitomo Drive Technologies group. This gives Invertek the backing and resources of a major global engineering organisation while allowing it to retain its specialist focus on variable frequency drives, motor control and energy-efficient drive technology.

Betech has supplied Invertek drives throughout the UK for over 10 years. As an official Invertek Sales Partner and manufacturer-approved service centre, we distribute thousands of Optidrive units each year and provide technical support for customers selecting, installing, replacing and servicing Invertek variable speed drives.

IP20 or IP66 – Whats the difference?

The IP or ingress protection rating classifies how the variable speed drive should be installed.  Invertek offer the broadest range of enclosure types of any single drive manufacturer, which is useful but means the enclosure decision often comes before the model decision.

IP20 panel mount is the default and the cheaper option. The drive goes inside a control panel and the panel does the environmental protection.  It’s vital to consult the product manual on the required panel spacing, and you need to think about ventilation, because drives generate heat.  The IP20 drives are generally suitable for ambient temperatures up to 50 Degrees C.

IP66 enclosed mounts directly on or beside the machine. Dust tight and protected against powerful water jets, so it survives washdown areas, outdoor plant and dusty environments.  The outdoor switched version adds start, stop and speed control on the enclosure itself, as well as a speed potentiometer for easy local control, but you can lock these controls off too.

The E3 is available in both IP20 and IP66 options. The P2 and ECO are available IP20, IP55 and IP66 depending on size. The E4 is currently available in IP20 panel mount only, but expect that to change in the future.

If the drive is going into a food or beverage washdown area, talk to us before you order. IP66 is not automatically the right answer and the cleaning regime changes the specification.

Invertek Drives Ltd, based at Offa’s Dyke Business Park in Welshpool, Powys. Founded in 1998, the company designs and manufactures the Optidrive range and sells into around 80 countries. Betech is an official UK sales partner and a manufacturer approved service centre.

At Invertek’s own facility in Welshpool, mid Wales. Invertek is a British manufacturer.

The E4 does not replace the E3.  It adds safe torque off as standard, expanded I/O and additional communication options, while keeping the E3’s straightforward setup. The E3 remains the choice for straightforward speed control and is currently the only one of the two available in an IP66 enclosure.

The standard E3 has a three phase output and is for three phase motors. Invertek make a separate variant, the Optidrive E3 for single phase motors, with a single phase output for PSC and shaded pole induction motors from 0.37 to 1.1 kW. They are not interchangeable – if you are not sure which motor you have, send us the nameplate.

The E3 covers 0.37 to 37 kW on three phase output and 0.37 to 1.1 kW on single phase output. The E4 covers up to 37 kW. The P2 and ECO both cover 0.75 to 250 kW.

IP20 drives are panel mount and rely on the panel for environmental protection. IP66 drives are dust tight and protected against powerful water jets, so they mount directly on the machine, indoors or out, with no panel. The outdoor switched IP66 version adds start, stop and speed control on the enclosure itself.

The Optidrive P2. Lifting needs advanced motor control for smooth operation, brake control and precise load positioning, and the P2 is the range built for it.

Yes. We hold the E3 in every enclosure option, and the P2 and ECO in sizes to 250 kW, at our Heckmondwike facility in West Yorkshire. Tell us the rating, enclosure and duty and we will confirm availability while you are on the phone.

Invertek increased the standard warranty on the Optidrive range to three years.

Yes, and it is worth asking. Send us the motor nameplate and a description of the application, or call 01924 411921. Getting the enclosure rating and control mode right at the order stage avoids most of problems at the commissioning stage.
