ABB Baldor-Reliance EC Titanium Motors

IE5 ultra premium efficiency synchronous reluctance motors, motor-only or with an integrated drive

NEMA or IEC Frames / Up to 20 HP

ABB Baldor-Reliance EC Titanium™ motors reach IE5 efficiency using ferrite assisted synchronous reluctance technology, with no rare earth magnets. They are the highest-efficiency motors in the ABB Baldor-Reliance NEMA range, for fans, pumps, compressors, conveyors and HVACR equipment running at variable speed.

About ABB Baldor-Reliance EC Titanium motors

EC Titanium was introduced in 2020 as the first ferrite assisted synchronous reluctance (FASR) industrial motor. The rotor has no windings or rare earth magnets, which cuts rotor losses and lets the motor reach IE5 efficiency. ABB states up to 16% efficiency gains compared with alternative motor designs, and the efficiency stays high across the speed range, including above base speed.

A synchronous reluctance motor needs a variable speed drive to run, so EC Titanium comes two ways:

  • Motor only (General Purpose SP5+): 1 to 20 HP. An open-drive motor that pairs with most variable speed drives, in NEMA 140, 180 and 210 or IEC 90, 112 and 132 frames.
  • Integrated motor drive: 1 to 10 HP. The drive is mounted on the motor, on top (1 to 10 HP) or axially at the non-drive end (1 to 7.5 HP), saving panel space and motor cabling.

Both use standard NEMA dimensions, so they can replace an induction motor of the same frame. Where IE4-class efficiency direct on line is enough, see the SP4 Super Premium motors. For hygienic duty, an SP5+ Food Safe version is available in the washdown duty range.

ABB Baldor-Reliance EC Titanium features and benefits

  • IE5 efficiency. NEMA Premium® 5 (IE5 per IEC TS 60034-30-2).
  • Ferrite assisted synchronous reluctance. No rare earth magnets, with low rotor losses.
  • Up to 16% efficiency gains. Compared with alternative motor designs (ABB figure).
  • High efficiency across the speed range. Including at part load and above base speed.
  • Motor-only or integrated drive. Motor-only to 20 HP; integrated drive to 10 HP.
  • NEMA or IEC frames. NEMA 140, 180 and 210; IEC 90, 112 and 132; standard NEMA dimensions for drop-in replacement.
  • Smaller drives. Near-unity power factor on the integrated version allows a smaller drive.
  • Bearing protection. Internal shaft grounding brush to mitigate bearing currents.
  • TEFC, IP54 (IP55 CE version), Class F insulation, 3-year warranty.

ABB Baldor-Reliance EC Titanium FAQs

EC Titanium is ABB Baldor-Reliance’s IE5 efficiency motor. It uses a ferrite assisted synchronous reluctance rotor instead of an induction rotor, which removes most rotor losses. It is sold as a motor-only design or with an integrated variable speed drive.

IE5 is the highest efficiency class defined by IEC TS 60034-30-2 for variable speed motors, one level above IE4. ABB rates EC Titanium as NEMA Premium® 5, equivalent to IE5.

Yes. A synchronous reluctance motor cannot run direct on line. The motor-only version pairs with most variable speed drives; the integrated version has the drive built in.

A synchronous reluctance motor turns at exactly the supply frequency set by the drive, with a rotor shaped to follow the rotating magnetic field. There are no rotor windings, so rotor losses are much lower than in an induction motor. EC Titanium adds ferrite magnets to the rotor to boost performance without rare earth materials.

EC Titanium uses standard NEMA dimensions in 140, 180 and 210 frames, and IEC 90, 112 and 132 frames, so it can replace an induction motor of the same frame mechanically. The installation will also need a suitable variable speed drive, or the integrated version.

SP4 is an induction motor that reaches IE4-class efficiency direct on line, without a drive. EC Titanium reaches IE5 but always runs on a drive. For variable speed applications such as fans and pumps, EC Titanium gives the higher efficiency.
