Up to NEMA 449T Frame / 300 HP / 2, 4, 6 Pole
ABB Baldor-Reliance SP4 motors are the high-efficiency tier of the ABB Baldor-Reliance NEMA range. They reach NEMA Super Premium® efficiency, comparable to IEC IE4, without needing a variable speed drive, and cut motor losses by an average of 20% compared with Super-E® NEMA Premium® motors.
SP4 takes ABB Baldor-Reliance’s standard induction motor designs up to NEMA Super Premium® efficiency, also called NEMA Premium® 4. That level is comparable to IEC’s IE4 class, and SP4 reaches it across the line, independently of a drive. The motors use a simple drop-in design and can run direct on line or on an inverter.
The range covers:
For OEMs building machinery for North America, efficiency rules are tightening: from June 2027, a US Department of Energy rule requires 100 to 250 HP industrial motors to reach NEMA Premium® 4 / IE4 levels. Where efficiency beyond IE4 is needed, see EC Titanium motors. For standard NEMA Premium® efficiency, see the general purpose motors.

NEMA Super Premium®, also called NEMA Premium® 4, is the efficiency level above NEMA Premium®. ABB describes it as comparable to IEC’s IE4 class. ABB Baldor-Reliance SP4 motors reach it as standard induction motors running direct on line.
SP4 motors are rated to NEMA efficiency standards rather than IEC, but ABB describes NEMA Premium® 4 as comparable to IE4. On a NEMA motor, the nameplate shows the NEMA nominal efficiency rather than an IE class.
No. SP4 motors reach NEMA Super Premium® efficiency running direct on line. They are also suitable for inverter use to NEMA MG1 Part 31.4.4.2 where variable speed is needed.
ABB states that SP4 motors cut motor losses by an average of 20% compared with Super-E® NEMA Premium® motors, and by up to 40% compared with a NEMA standard efficient (IE2-class) motor.
SP4 is designed as a drop-in replacement on standard NEMA frames. Check the frame size, shaft and mounting dimensions on the datasheet against the existing motor before ordering.
From June 2027, a US Department of Energy rule requires 100 to 250 HP industrial motors to reach NEMA Premium® 4 / IE4 levels. UK OEMs building machinery for the North American market need motors that meet it.
SP4 is an induction motor that reaches IE4-class efficiency direct on line. EC Titanium is a synchronous reluctance motor that reaches IE5 efficiency but needs a variable speed drive to run.
