Up to NEMA 5000 Frame / 900 HP / 2, 4, 6, 8 Pole
ABB Baldor-Reliance severe duty motors are three phase, cast iron motors in the ABB Baldor-Reliance NEMA range, built to protect critical processes from contamination, moisture, vibration and corrosion. They suit chemical and petrochemical plant, oil and gas, pulp and paper, mining and aggregates, metals and water treatment.
A severe duty motor goes further than a general purpose motor. ABB Baldor-Reliance severe duty motors have cast iron frames, endplates and conduit boxes, a two-part epoxy paint system and shaft slingers at both ends. Most use Super-E® NEMA Premium® electrical designs, with high starting and peak torque and a wide speed range.
The range splits into lines for different duties:
Division 2 certification covers areas where a flammable atmosphere is present only under abnormal conditions. For Division 1 or ATEX zones, an explosion proof motor is needed.

A severe duty motor is a totally enclosed motor built for harsher conditions than a general purpose motor. It typically has a cast iron frame and endplates, better sealing, corrosion-resistant paint and a stronger shaft, so it can run continuously in dirty, wet or corrosive plant.
XT is the entry line: 1 to 300 HP in frames 143T to 449T, IP54. XEX is the heavier-duty line: 1 to 900 HP in frames up to 5000, IP55, with regreasable bearings on all frames, an oversized conduit box and stainless steel nameplates. Both are cast iron, Division 2 certified and carry a 3-year warranty.
IEEE 841 is the petroleum and chemical industry standard for severe duty totally enclosed motors. It sets tighter limits on vibration, sealing, temperature rise and bearing life. The ABB Baldor-Reliance 841XL and 661XL meet IEEE 841 and IEEE 45, are rated IP56 and carry a 5-year warranty.
The XT, XEX, 841XL and 661XL lines are certified for Division 2 under the North American Class and Division system. For Division 1 locations, or where ATEX equipment is required on a UK site, use an explosion proof motor.
Quarry Duty motors (145T to 215T) have NEMA Design C high starting torque. Crusher Duty motors (180T to 588) have NEMA Design A torque characteristics that exceed Design C, with a 1.25 service factor up to 100 HP.
Both are ABB NEMA motors. The ABB Baldor-Reliance lines (XT, XEX, 841XL and others) come from Baldor Electric Company, acquired by ABB in 2011. The ABB-branded SD100 and SD200 come from the NEMA motor business ABB acquired in 2023. See ABB NEMA severe duty motors for that range.
These are 60 Hz designs. Some ratings carry 50 Hz data on the nameplate, but speed, output and voltage at 50 Hz differ from the 60 Hz rating, so check the datasheet for the specific motor and supply.
