ABB logo

ABB SD100 and SD200 motors are three-phase, cast iron NEMA motors built for continuous duty where dirt, moisture, chemicals and vibration shorten the life of a standard motor: chemical and petrochemical plant, oil and gas, pulp and paper, mining and water treatment. Both are NEMA Premium® efficient, suitable for inverter use and certified for Division 2 hazardous locations.

About ABB SD100 and SD200 severe duty motors

The SD severe duty range came to ABB with the Siemens low voltage NEMA motor business in 2023 and continues under the ABB name. A severe duty motor goes further than a general purpose motor: cast iron frame and bearing housings, better sealing, a corrosion-resistant finish and a higher-strength shaft, so it keeps running in plant where a standard TEFC motor would wear out early.

The range splits by size, with an IEEE 841 version of each:

  • SD100: 1 to 100 HP. The everyday severe duty motor, in NEMA frames from 143T. Class F insulation, IP55, regreasable bearings on every frame size and a C-1045 steel shaft.
  • SD200: 75 to 800 HP. For large process drives, in NEMA frames 444T to 5013. Class H insulation, a C-4140 steel shaft and an oversized conduit box. NEMA Super Premium® efficiency is available.
  • SD100 IEEE 841 and SD200 841. Built to IEEE 841-2021 for petroleum and chemical plants, with IP56 sealing, bearing isolators at both ends, a 0.06 in/s vibration limit and a test report shipped with every motor.

Both lines are certified for Class I and Class II, Division 2 hazardous locations. Where the area is classified Division 1, an explosion proof motor is needed instead.

ABB SD100 and SD200 features and benefits

  • 1–800 HP across NEMA frames 143T–5013. SD100 up to 100 HP; SD200 from 75 HP to 800 HP; 2, 4, 6 and 8 pole.
  • Heavy-duty cast iron construction. Frame and bearing housings resist contamination, moisture, vibration and demanding duty cycles.
  • NEMA Premium® efficiency as standard. The SD200 is also available with NEMA Super Premium® efficiency.
  • Division 2 hazardous location certification. Class I, Division 2, Groups A–D and Class II, Division 2, Groups F and G, NRTL certified.
  • IEEE 841 versions. IP56, bearing isolators on both ends, 0.06 in/s vibration and an IEEE 841 test report with each motor.
  • Suitable for inverter use. Built to NEMA MG1 Part 31.4.4.2, with a 20:1 variable torque speed range on a variable speed drive.
  • Corrosion-resistant finish. SD100 paint is salt-spray tested for more than 400 hours.
  • High-strength shafts. C-1045 steel on the SD100 and C-4140 on the SD200.
  • Insulation with thermal headroom. Class F (SD100) or Class H (SD200), with a Class B temperature rise at 1.0 service factor.

ABB severe duty motor FAQs

A severe duty motor is a totally enclosed fan cooled (TEFC) motor built for harsher conditions than a general purpose motor. It typically has a cast iron frame and bearing housings, better seals, corrosion-resistant paint and hardware, and a stronger shaft. That lets it run continuously in dirty, wet or corrosive plant such as chemical works, mines, paper mills and water treatment sites.

Size and construction. The SD100 covers 1–100 HP with Class F insulation and a C-1045 steel shaft. The SD200 covers 75–800 HP in frames 444T to 5013, with Class H insulation, a C-4140 steel shaft and an oversized conduit box. Both are cast iron, NEMA Premium® efficient and certified for Division 2 hazardous locations.

IEEE 841 is the petroleum and chemical industry standard for severe duty TEFC induction motors up to 500 HP. It sets tighter limits on vibration, bearing life, temperature rise and sealing than a standard severe duty motor. The ABB SD100 IEEE 841 and SD200 841 meet IEEE 841-2021, with IP56 sealing, bearing isolators on both ends, a 0.06 in/s vibration limit and a test report with every motor.

The SD100 and SD200 are certified for Division 2: Class I, Groups A–D (gases) and Class II, Groups F and G (dusts), with frame limits on the SD100. Division 2 covers areas where a flammable atmosphere is present only under abnormal conditions. For Division 1 areas, use an explosion proof motor. Class and Division is the North American system; on a UK site, the hazardous area classification decides what equipment is acceptable.

It is the same product line. ABB acquired the Siemens low voltage NEMA motor business in 2023 and the SD100 continues under the ABB name. The range has been revised since: ABB now lists the SD100 up to 100 HP, with larger ratings in the SD200. Check the part number on the original Siemens nameplate against the current ABB datasheet before ordering a replacement.

NEMA motors are designed for 60 Hz supplies. Some ratings carry a dual 60/50 Hz nameplate, but output, speed and voltage at 50 Hz differ from the 60 Hz rating, so check the datasheet for the specific motor and supply.
