Up to NEMA 449T Frame / 300 HP / 2, 4, 6, 8 Pole
The ABB XP100 is a three-phase, cast iron explosion proof NEMA motor, UL listed and CSA certified for Division 1 hazardous locations: Class I, Groups C and D (gases and vapours) and Class II, Groups F and G (combustible dusts). It is NEMA Premium® efficient and suitable for inverter use. Its certification follows the North American Class and Division system, not ATEX or UKEX.
The XP100 came to ABB with the Siemens low voltage NEMA motor business in 2023 and continues under the ABB name. It covers 1 to 300 HP in NEMA frames 143T to 449T, with a cast iron frame and an explosion proof conduit box as standard.
Explosion proof means the enclosure is built to contain an explosion inside the motor and stop flame or hot gas escaping to ignite the atmosphere around it, while its outer surface stays below the ignition temperature of the gas or dust present. The XP100 is certified for:
The XP100 meets UL and CSA requirements for hazardous locations under the US National Electrical Code (NFPA 70) and the Canadian Electrical Code. UK and European hazardous areas are classified by zone, and equipment for them is normally ATEX or UKEX marked. The XP100 fits where a NEMA Class and Division motor is specified, such as replacing an installed NEMA explosion proof motor or building equipment for North America. Where the area is Division 2 rather than Division 1, an ABB severe duty motor is often enough.

An explosion proof motor is built so that if gas or vapour inside it ignites, the enclosure contains the explosion and cools escaping gases so they can’t ignite the atmosphere outside. Its surface temperature is also kept below the ignition temperature of the gas or dust it is rated for. It is a specific certification, not just a heavy-duty build.
They are the North American hazardous location categories. Class describes the hazard: Class I is gas or vapour, Class II is combustible dust. Division describes how likely it is to be present: Division 1 in normal operation, Division 2 only under abnormal conditions. Group identifies the substance: the XP100 covers Groups C and D (Class I) and F and G (Class II).
No. The XP100 is UL listed and CSA certified to the North American Class and Division system. UK and European hazardous areas use zones, and equipment is normally ATEX or UKEX marked. The XP100 suits sites or machines specified to NEMA and NEC requirements; whether it is acceptable on a particular UK site is a decision for that site’s hazardous area assessment.
An explosion proof motor is certified for Division 1, where a flammable atmosphere can be present in normal operation, and is built to contain an internal explosion. A Division 2 motor, such as the ABB SD100 or SD200 severe duty motor, is for areas where the hazard is present only under abnormal conditions, and relies on not producing sparks or hot surfaces in normal running.
Yes, within its certified ratings. The XP100 is suitable for inverter use to NEMA MG1 Part 31.4.4.2, with 20:1 variable torque and 4:1 constant torque speed ranges. In a hazardous location, the drive operation must stay within the speed range and thermal protection shown on the motor nameplate and datasheet.
It is the same product line. ABB acquired the Siemens low voltage NEMA motor business in 2023 and the XP100 continues under the ABB name. Check the part number and hazardous location markings on the original nameplate against the current ABB datasheet before ordering a replacement.
