Up to NEMA 449T Frame / 400 HP / 2, 4, 6, 8 Pole
ABB Baldor-Reliance general purpose motors are the everyday AC motors in the ABB Baldor-Reliance NEMA range, built for fans, pumps, conveyors, compressors and general machinery. Single phase models run from 1/12 to 15 HP and three phase models from 1/8 to 400 HP, in foot-mounted and C-face designs.
Baldor-Reliance general purpose motors are built in ABB’s US manufacturing facilities and are listed in the Baldor-Reliance 501 stock catalogue. They suit applications that don’t need hazardous location certification or a heavily customised design, and are designed for a long service life with little maintenance.
The range splits by supply and by enclosure:
Choose a totally enclosed motor where the motor is exposed to dust, moisture or washdown spray, and an open motor where the air is clean. For corrosive or heavily contaminated plant, a severe duty motor is the better fit; for hygienic food production, a washdown duty motor. Where efficiency beyond NEMA Premium® is required, see the SP4 Super Premium motors.

A general purpose motor is a standard AC induction motor built to NEMA dimensions and performance ratings for everyday industrial duty: fans, pumps, conveyors, compressors and machine tools. It is designed for normal operating conditions rather than a specific hazard. Motors for corrosive plant, hygienic washdown or hazardous areas are built differently, as severe duty, washdown duty or explosion proof motors.
It depends on the supply. Single phase motors run where only a single phase supply is available, typically up to 15 HP in this range. Three phase motors cover 1/8 to 400 HP, run more efficiently, and can be speed-controlled with a variable speed drive. If a three phase supply is available, a three phase motor is usually the better choice.
A totally enclosed fan cooled (TEFC) motor is sealed against the surrounding air and cooled by an external fan, so it suits dusty, damp or outdoor locations. An open drip proof (ODP) motor draws air through the windings to cool them. It gives more output in a smaller frame but should only be used in clean, dry, indoor locations.
Super-E® is Baldor-Reliance’s name for its NEMA Premium® efficiency motors. In the general purpose range, Super-E® three phase motors combine NEMA Premium® efficiency with inverter duty capability and a 36-month manufacturer’s warranty. For higher efficiency still, the SP4 Super Premium range meets NEMA Super Premium® levels.
Both are ABB NEMA motors. ABB Baldor-Reliance general purpose motors come from Baldor Electric Company, acquired by ABB in 2011, and cover single and three phase from 1/12 to 400 HP. The ABB-branded GP100 and GP100A are three phase TEFC motors from the NEMA motor business ABB acquired in 2023. See ABB NEMA general purpose motors for that range.
These are 60 Hz designs. Super-E® three phase motors carry 50 Hz ratings on the nameplate for 2, 4 and 6 pole motors from 1 to 125 HP. At 50 Hz, speed, output and voltage differ from the 60 Hz rating, so check the datasheet for the specific motor and supply.
Yes. Baldor-Reliance builds brake motor versions of its general purpose motors. Contact us with the horsepower, frame, voltage and braking torque required.
Start with the motor nameplate. The catalogue number or spec number, horsepower, speed, frame, voltage, enclosure and mounting are usually enough to identify the current ABB Baldor-Reliance equivalent. Our guide to reading a NEMA motor nameplate explains each field.
Send us the catalogue number from the motor nameplate, or the horsepower, speed, frame, voltage and hazardous area classification (Class/Division or ATEX zone, gas group and temperature class), for a quote. Call 01924 411921 or email sales@betech.co.uk.
