ABB Baldor-Reliance washdown duty motors are built for food and beverage plants where equipment is cleaned with high-pressure water and caustic solutions. The ABB Baldor-Reliance NEMA range offers four levels of protection, from white washdown to fully encapsulated IP69 Food Safe stainless steel, in NEMA frames with IEC frame versions available.

About ABB Baldor-Reliance washdown duty motors

ABB matches its washdown motors to hygiene zones aligned with NSF standards: Zone 1 for high-pressure washdown with food contact, Zone 2 for occasional moisture, and Zone 3 for minimal exposure. The range has four levels:

Food Safe stainless steel: 1/2 to 30 HP. For Zone 1. Fully encapsulated 300 series stainless steel motors rated IP69, with epoxy-encapsulated windings and leads and a smooth, crevice-free body that sheds water and debris. Three phase from 1/2 to 30 HP and single phase from 1/2 to 1 HP, in NEMA frames 56C to 286TC.
Stainless steel: 1/3 to 15 HP. Non-encapsulated stainless steel, three phase, C-face, in frames 56C to 256TC.
Paint-free: 1/2 to 10 HP. For Zone 2. No paint to chip or flake into product, rated IP55, including inverter duty versions.
White washdown: 1/2 to 20 HP. For Zone 2. Epoxy-coated, IP55, in frames 56 to 256T.

Food Safe stainless steel motors are also made in IEC frames for 50 Hz equipment, and as close-coupled pump motors. For IE5 efficiency in a Food Safe design, the SP5+ Food Safe motor uses EC Titanium technology from 1 to 10 HP. For washdown pump duty, see the pump motors.

What is a washdown duty motor?

A washdown duty motor is built to survive regular cleaning with water and chemicals. It has sealing, finishes and materials that resist water ingress and corrosion, so it can be cleaned in place on food, beverage and pharmaceutical lines.

What is the difference between Food Safe, stainless, paint-free and white washdown motors?

They are levels of protection. Food Safe motors are fully encapsulated stainless steel rated IP69 for direct high-pressure washdown. Stainless steel motors are stainless but not encapsulated. Paint-free motors have no paint to flake off. White washdown motors have an epoxy finish for lighter washdown areas.

What does IP69 mean on a Food Safe motor?

IP69 is the highest ingress protection rating for water. It covers close-range, high-pressure, high-temperature water jets, the conditions of a hygienic washdown in food processing.

Are there IEC frame washdown motors?

Yes. ABB Baldor-Reliance Food Safe stainless steel motors are also made in IEC metric frames for 50 Hz equipment. Contact us with the kW, speed, frame and mounting needed.

Can a washdown motor be used with a variable speed drive?

Three phase ABB Baldor-Reliance washdown motors are rated for inverter duty to NEMA MG1 Part 31, and paint-free inverter duty versions are available. Use a drive enclosure suited to the washdown area.

Are single phase washdown motors available?

Yes. Food Safe stainless steel motors come in single phase from 1/2 to 1 HP at 115/230 V.
