ABB Baldor-Reliance pump motors are built around the way each type of pump mounts and loads the motor. The ABB Baldor-Reliance NEMA range covers close-coupled, jet, square flange, hydraulic and vertical pump motors for water and wastewater, process, irrigation, HVAC, fire suppression and pool pumps.

About ABB Baldor-Reliance pump motors

Each pump motor type has a shaft and mounting matched to the pump it drives:

Close coupled JM, JP and TCZ: 1 to 75 HP. The pump impeller mounts directly on the motor shaft, in NEMA frames 143 to 365JP. Open drip proof (IP23) or totally enclosed (IP44), rolled steel or cast iron, with a locked drive-end bearing and oversized ball bearings. JM and JP shafts differ in length and design; TCZ is the West Coast fit.
Jet pump: 1/3 to 3 HP. NEMA 56J frame, single or three phase, with a threaded stainless steel shaft extension and thermal overload protection, for residential, agricultural and light industrial water systems.
Square flange: 1/2 to 2 HP. 56Y/56YZ square flange designs with SP4 Super Premium efficiency, single or three phase, as a direct fit for most pool and spa pumps.
SAE hydraulic: 5 to 10 HP. Frames 184TYZ to 215TYZ with SAE A and B-B pump mounting, for hydraulic power units.
Vertical P-base. Solid shaft vertical motors with normal, medium or high thrust for in-line and turbine pumps.

Pump motors are also built in washdown and explosion proof versions for food plants and hazardous areas. For an end-suction pump coupled through a C-face, a general purpose motor is often the better fit.

What is a close coupled pump motor?

A close coupled pump motor carries the pump impeller directly on its shaft, with no separate coupling or bearing frame. That makes the pump and motor one compact unit. The motor has a specific shaft and face (JM, JP or TCZ) to suit the pump.

What is the difference between JM and JP pump motors?

Both are NEMA close-coupled designs. They differ in shaft length and design to suit different pump types, so they are not interchangeable. Check the existing nameplate or pump manufacturer’s data for the type required.

What is a jet pump motor?

A jet pump motor drives a jet pump, typically in domestic, agricultural and light industrial water systems. It uses a NEMA 56J frame with a threaded shaft that screws onto the pump impeller.

Can a pump motor be run on a variable speed drive?

Yes. ABB Baldor-Reliance three phase pump motors are suitable for inverter use to NEMA MG1 Part 31.4.4.2. Varying pump speed is usually a more efficient way to control flow than a throttling valve.

Are washdown and explosion proof pump motors available?

Yes. Close-coupled and jet pump motors are built in Food Safe and washdown versions for food plants, and in explosion proof versions for pumps in hazardous areas.

What is the difference between ABB and ABB Baldor-Reliance pump motors?

Both are ABB NEMA motors. ABB Baldor-Reliance pump motors come from Baldor Electric Company, acquired by ABB in 2011, and focus on close-coupled, jet, square flange and hydraulic designs.
