ABB logo

ABB pump motors are three-phase, cast iron NEMA motors designed for pumping duty: LP100 and HP100 vertical solid shaft motors for in-line, booster and vertical turbine pumps, and the DP200 HPS for horizontal multi-stage pump systems. All are NEMA Premium® efficient.

About ABB vertical and horizontal pump motors

Like the rest of the ABB NEMA range, these pump motors came to ABB with the Siemens low voltage NEMA motor business in 2023 and continue under the ABB name. Each is built around the load a particular pump puts on the motor, in particular how much axial thrust the motor bearings have to carry.

  • HP100: vertical solid shaft, normal thrust. 3 to 250 HP in P-base frames 182HP to 447HP, for pumps that carry most of their own axial load.
  • LP100: vertical solid shaft, high or extra high thrust. 3 to 250 HP in frames 182LP to 447LP, with up to 175% more thrust capacity than a conventional motor of the same design. Built for in-line and booster pumps, with API 610 compliance, a non-reverse ratchet, ceramic drive-end bearings and bearing isolators available as options.
  • DP200 HPS: horizontal pump systems. 400 to 600 HP in frames 509 to 5013, built on the SD200 severe duty motor platform for horizontal multi-stage centrifugal pumps moving high pressures and flows.

The LP100 and HP100 are designed to IEEE 841-2021. For close-coupled or end-suction pumps that don’t need a dedicated pump motor, a C-face general purpose motor is usually the better fit.

ABB pump motor features and benefits

  • Vertical and horizontal designs. Vertical solid shaft motors from 3 to 250 HP and horizontal pump system motors from 400 to 600 HP.
  • Thrust matched to the pump. Normal thrust (HP100), or high and extra high thrust (LP100) with up to 175% more thrust capacity than a conventional design.
  • NEMA Premium® efficiency. Across the range, for lower running costs on continuous pumping duty.
  • Built for process standards. LP100 and HP100 are designed to IEEE 841-2021, with API 610 available on the LP100 and as an option on the DP200 HPS.
  • Cast iron construction. Cast iron frames with oversized cast iron conduit boxes, galvanised hardware and corrosion-resistant epoxy paint.
  • Suitable for inverter use. LP100, HP100 and DP200 HPS are built to NEMA MG1 Part 31, with a 20:1 variable torque speed range on a variable speed drive.
  • Backspin protection. A non-reverse ratchet is available on the LP100 to stop the motor turning backwards when the pump stops.
  • Monitoring on the DP200 HPS. Winding RTDs fitted as standard, with provisions for bearing RTDs and vibration sensors.
  • Hazardous area options. The DP200 HPS is certified for Class I, Division 2, Groups A, B and C.

ABB pump motor FAQs

A vertical P-base motor mounts on top of the pump through a machined P-flange base, with the shaft pointing down into the pump. Its thrust bearing carries the axial load from the pump, so the motor is chosen by thrust rating as well as horsepower. The ABB LP100 and HP100 are both P-base motors with a solid shaft that couples to the pump shaft below the motor.

Thrust. Both are vertical solid shaft P-base motors from 3 to 250 HP, designed to IEEE 841-2021. The HP100 is a normal thrust motor for pumps that carry most of their own axial load. The LP100 is a high or extra high thrust motor, with up to 175% more thrust capacity than a conventional design, for in-line and booster pumps. API 610 compliance, a non-reverse ratchet, ceramic drive-end bearings and bearing isolators are options on the LP100.

Use the down-thrust and up-thrust figures from the pump manufacturer. Normal thrust (HP100) suits pumps that carry most of their own axial load. High or extra high thrust (LP100) suits pumps where the motor bearings take the impeller weight and hydraulic thrust.

It stops the motor and pump turning backwards when the pump stops and water drains back down the column. Backspin can damage the motor and loosen line shaft couplings, so a ratchet is common on vertical turbine pumps. It is available as an option on the ABB LP100.

Yes. The LP100, HP100 and DP200 HPS are built for inverter use to NEMA MG1 Part 31, with a 20:1 speed range on variable torque loads such as centrifugal pumps.

NEMA motors are designed for 60 Hz supplies. Some ratings carry a dual 60/50 Hz nameplate, but output, speed and voltage at 50 Hz differ from the 60 Hz rating, and pump output changes with speed. Check the datasheet for the specific motor and supply.
