NEMA or IEC Frames / 1/8 to 500 HP
ABB Baldor-Reliance DC motors give strong low-speed torque and simple speed control on an SCR drive. The DC part of the ABB Baldor-Reliance NEMA range runs from fractional permanent magnet motors to 500 HP wound field motors, for extruders, conveyors, cranes and hoists, test stands, rolling mills, machine tools and paper machines.
Baldor-Reliance has built DC motors for decades, and many plants still run them. The range covers three designs:
DC tachometers and encoders are available for speed feedback. Where a DC motor is due for replacement, an AC variable speed motor such as RPM AC is often considered. For explosion proof DC motors, see the explosion proof motors.

A permanent magnet DC motor uses magnets for its field, so it is compact and simple, and suits smaller ratings up to 5 HP. A shunt wound motor uses a separately supplied field winding, which allows larger ratings and speed above base by weakening the field.
RPM III is Baldor-Reliance’s laminated square-frame DC motor, from 1 to 500 HP. The laminated frame packs more torque into a smaller space than a conventional round-frame motor, with better commutation and heat dissipation.
Start with the nameplate: catalogue or spec number, horsepower, base speed, armature and field voltage, frame and enclosure. These are usually enough to identify the current ABB Baldor-Reliance equivalent. Our guide to reading a NEMA motor nameplate explains each field.
The armature voltage must match the DC drive output. Permanent magnet motors are wound for 90 V or 180 V; wound field motors for 180, 240 or 500 V with matching field voltages. Check the existing motor’s nameplate and the drive rating.
Yes. Permanent magnet motors come in IEC frames D63D to D112D, wound field motors in IEC 112 to 315, and RPM III in IEC 112 to 280.
It depends on the machine. Many DC applications can move to an AC variable speed motor and drive, removing brush and commutator maintenance. Where the existing DC drive and controls are staying, a like-for-like DC motor is usually simpler.
