Clean-Geartech APM Series Hygienic Aluminium Motors

Smooth-bodied aluminium motors with a protective high-resistance coating, for washdown areas that use hot or cold water and mild detergents.

IEC 63–90 · 0.12–2.2kW · 2, 4 and 6 pole · IE4 · IP69K

The APM Series is the hygienic aluminium motor in the Clean-Geartech range: an upgrade on a standard painted three-phase motor, with a smooth anodised body, no ribs, fins or fan, and IP69K sealing. It gives most of the cleanability of stainless steel where the clean-down chemistry does not need it.

APM Series overview

A standard motor’s cooling fins, fan cowl and painted finish are exactly where dirt collects and corrosion starts on a washdown line. The APM removes them. Its aluminium housing and covers are smooth and rib-free, the body is anodised, the flanges carry a special protective coating, and the whole motor is totally enclosed non-ventilated (TENV), so there is no fan pulling air and moisture through it.

The range covers IEC frames 63 to 90 from 0.12kW to 2.2kW in 2, 4 and 6 pole, for 230/400V 50Hz three-phase supplies, with NEMA versions available. Motors are IE4 super premium efficiency (IE3 on versions with a reduced output flange), rated S1, with Class F insulation that withstands inverter voltage spikes and PTO thermal protection as standard. The standard B14 flange mounts directly to a gearbox.

The APM suits equipment near the product that is washed with cold or hot water, without aggressive detergents. It pairs with the VFD Series smooth aluminium worm gearbox. Where the line is cleaned with high-pressure hot water and acid or alkaline chemicals, specify the stainless steel SPM Series instead.

ABB GP100 features and benefits

  • Smooth, rib-free aluminium body – anodised, with a protective high-resistance coating, and nothing for dirt to collect in.
  • TENV design – no fan or cowl, and no air path through the motor.
  • IP69K protection – sealed against high-pressure, high-temperature water jets.
  • IE4 super premium efficiency – S1 duty across the standard range.
  • Inverter rated – Class F insulation resists inverter voltage spikes.
  • AISI 420 stainless steel shaft – NBR oil seal and a flinger against high-pressure spray, with a double seal option.
  • Hygienic cable gland – radial terminal box as standard, or a direct UL-certified cable in the axial position.
  • PTO thermal protection as standard – with PTC thermistors, anti-condensation heaters and protective paint available.
  • Lower cost than stainless steel – for applications that do not need a full 316L motor.

APM Series FAQs

When the line is washed with cold or hot water and mild detergent. The APM gives the same smooth, fan-free, IP69K design at a lower cost. If the clean-down uses high-pressure hot water with aggressive acid or alkaline chemicals, or the motor is in an open-product zone, choose the stainless steel SPM Series.

Yes. The APM is sealed to IP69K, the rating for close-range water jets at up to 100 bar and 80°C. Its limit is the aluminium body, which is not intended for aggressive cleaning chemicals.

No. Every APM motor is totally enclosed non-ventilated, so there is no fan, cowl or cooling fins to collect dirt and no air drawn through the motor.

Yes. The Class F insulation system withstands inverter voltage spikes, so APM motors can be used with variable speed drives.

The VFD Series smooth aluminium worm gearbox, which mounts the APM directly on its B14 input. Read more on the advantages of hygienic motors in manufacturing.

IE4 super premium across the standard range. Versions with a reduced output flange are IE3. See the expanded Clean-Geartech motor range for more on the APM and SPM.
