SELF POWER is Motovario’s self-starting synchronous motor, a hybrid between an asynchronous motor and a reluctance motor. It starts direct on line like a standard induction motor, then pulls into synchronism and runs at constant speed regardless of load, with no magnets, no encoder and no drive required.

Self Power overview

The SELF POWER rotor combines a squirrel cage with an advanced magnet-free reluctance geometry. The cage starts the motor asynchronously from the mains; once up to speed, the reluctance design locks the rotor to the supply frequency, so the motor runs at synchronous speed, 1500rpm on a 50Hz supply or 1800rpm on 60Hz, without slip.

The range covers 0.55kW to 7.5kW in 4 pole, in IEC frames 80 to 132, with most ratings in IE4 super premium efficiency. Higher power density means some ratings fit a smaller frame than an equivalent asynchronous motor: 2.2kW is available in frame 90 instead of 100. Overall dimensions match an IE2 asynchronous motor, so it can replace one directly. Casings and flanges are die-cast aluminium, insulation is Class F and protection is IP55 as standard, and a brake version (TBSP-SL) is available.

Because the speed is fixed by the supply frequency, a simple V/f scalar inverter can set an exact speed without encoder feedback, and several SELF POWER motors on one inverter run in synchronism. Lower bearing and winding temperatures and quieter running support longer service life.

Features and benefits

  • Line-start – starts direct from the mains, without an inverter.
  • Constant synchronous speed – 1500rpm at 50Hz regardless of load, without an encoder.
  • IE4 super premium efficiency – on most ratings from 0.55kW to 7.5kW.
  • No magnets – magnet-free reluctance rotor with a squirrel cage.
  • Higher power density – some ratings one frame size smaller than an asynchronous motor.
  • Interchangeable – same overall dimensions as an IE2 asynchronous motor; B3, B5, B14, B34 and B35 mounting.
  • Simple multi-motor synchronisation – several motors on one V/f inverter run at the same speed.
  • Cooler running – lower bearing and winding temperatures, quieter operation and less maintenance.
  • Brake version available – TBSP-SL with FM DC brake, MS AC brake on request.
  • CE, UKCA and CCC marked

ABB GP100 FAQs

A motor that starts like an induction motor, using a squirrel cage, then locks to the supply frequency and runs at synchronous speed. A conventional synchronous motor needs a drive or a separate starting method; the SELF POWER starts direct on line.

No. It starts and runs direct on line at 1500rpm on a 50Hz supply. A V/f scalar inverter can be used to set a different speed, with slip compensation switched off, and the motor holds that speed exactly without an encoder.

No. The rotor uses a reluctance geometry with a squirrel cage and no permanent magnets, which reduces the raw material in the motor and its environmental impact.

Yes. Its overall dimensions match an IE2 asynchronous motor of the same rating, so it can replace one directly with an efficiency gain. Check the load inertia against Motovario’s limit for each rating, so the motor can pull into synchronism.

Drives that benefit from exact, constant speed or high efficiency. Motovario lists pumps, compressors, fans and ventilation, bottling, textiles, conveyor belts and mixers.

Yes. B5 and B14 versions fit Motovario gearbox motor adaptors in the same way as the M Series three phase motors.
