IEC 63 to 132 · up to 7.5kW · 2, 4 and 6 pole · DC or AC brake · IP54 standard
Motovario TBS, TBH and TBP brake motors are the M Series three phase motors with an electromagnetic brake on the non-drive end. The brake is negative acting, so it engages when power is removed. A DC brake is fitted as standard, with an AC brake for rapid, high-load braking, and options include a manual release lever and a double brake.
Brake motors are built from the standard M Series motor without changing its electrical or mechanical design, except for the brake on the non-drive end. They are available as TBS (IE1, below 0.12kW), TBH (IE2) and TBP (IE3) single-speed motors and DB two-speed motors, in IEC frames 63 to 132 up to 7.5kW.
Three brake types are offered. The FM brake is DC, fitted as standard, and gives smooth, quiet, gradual starting and braking, which suits geared motors, transfer machines and electric trucks. The MS brake is AC, for rapid, precise braking and high braking loads, such as lifting and handling equipment and packaging machines. The ML is a compact DC brake for space-saving installations. All are negative acting: springs apply the brake whenever the coil is de-energised. Braking torque on the FM and MS brakes runs from 1.8Nm on frame 63 to 150Nm on frame 132M.
The brake coil is supplied through a rectifier, from the motor terminals or a separate supply, at 230V AC as standard on single-speed motors, with other AC and DC voltages available. Quick-release and rapid-braking rectifiers shorten response times for frequent cycles. Brake motors are IP54 as standard, with IP55, IP56, IP65 and IP66 versions.

Springs press the brake disc against the motor shield whenever the brake coil is de-energised. When the motor starts, the coil is powered and pulls the armature clear, so the shaft turns freely. Cutting the power, deliberately or in a supply failure, applies the brake.
The FM DC brake is the standard choice and gives smoother, quieter starting and stopping, which suits most geared motor drives. The MS AC brake responds faster and handles higher braking loads, for lifting, handling and high-cycle automation.
On single-speed motors the standard brake supply is 230V AC, rectified to 103V DC. It can be taken from the motor terminals or supplied separately. Other AC voltages from 115V to 415V, and 12V, 24V, 103V and 178V DC, are available.
Two FM brakes, each with its own rectifier, for applications that need a redundant brake. Because the double brake motor has no cooling fan, it is rated for intermittent duty (S2 10 minutes or S3 10%).
Yes, with the manual release lever option. It returns automatically, can be removed, and is available in a version that locks in the released position.
Yes. M Series brake motors fit the IEC motor adaptors on Motovario worm, inline helical, bevel helical and shaft mounted gearboxes. Worm gearboxes at high ratios also resist back-driving, which works alongside the brake on inclined and lifting drives.
