Baldor-Reliance Explosion Proof Motors

Permanent magnet, integral horsepower shunt wound and RPM III laminated frame DC motors

Up to NEMA 449T Frame / 300 HP / 2, 4, 6 Pole

ABB Baldor-Reliance explosion proof motors are built for hazardous locations where flammable gases, vapours or combustible dusts may be present: oil and gas, chemical processing, grain handling and drilling. The ABB Baldor-Reliance NEMA range covers single and three phase general purpose, severe duty, drill rig and DC explosion proof motors, plus ATEX and IECEx flameproof models.

About ABB Baldor-Reliance explosion proof motors

Explosion proof motors contain any internal ignition so it cannot reach the surrounding atmosphere. ABB Baldor-Reliance motors are certified under two systems, and the right one depends on where the motor will run:

  • UL/CSA, Class and Division. The North American system. Motors are listed for Division 1 locations in Class I (gases, Groups C and D) and Class II (dusts, Groups E, F and G), depending on the design.
  • ATEX and IECEx. The European and international systems used on UK sites. ABB Baldor-Reliance flameproof (Ex d), non-sparking (Ex nA) and dust ignition proof (Ex tb) motors are separate models carrying ATEX and IECEx certification.

Within the UL/CSA range:

  • General purpose: 1/4 to 300 HP. Super-E® NEMA Premium® single and three phase motors in NEMA frames 48 to 449T, foot-mounted or C-face, plus pump and brake motor versions.
  • Severe duty: 3 to 150 HP. Three phase, frames 182T to 445T, with a 1.15 service factor, for Class I Groups C and D and Class II Groups E, F and G.
  • Drill rig duty: 1/3 to 100 HP. Single and three phase, for Class I Groups C and D, including areas where hydrogen sulphide is present.
  • DC explosion proof. Permanent magnet (DC motors) from 1/4 to 1-1/2 HP and shunt wound from 1/2 to 3 HP.

For Division 2 locations, a Division 2 certified severe duty motor may be enough.

ABB Baldor-Reliance explosion proof motor features and benefits

  • UL and CSA listed for Division 1. Class I Groups C and D, and Class II Groups E, F and G, depending on design.
  • ATEX and IECEx versions. Flameproof Ex d, non-sparking Ex nA and dust ignition proof Ex tb models, with dual gas/dust marking available.
  • 1/4 to 300 HP (UL/CSA). Single and three phase, NEMA frames 48 to 449T.
  • Super-E® NEMA Premium® efficiency. On three phase Super-E® explosion proof motors, with a 3-year warranty.
  • Cast iron frames. With lighter steel band designs available, multiple seal and flame path designs and a corrosion-coated rotor.
  • Approved conduit box as standard. UL and CSA approved, oversized, with potted leads and auxiliary lead outlets.
  • Temperature codes marked. Typically T3C on Division 1 motors; the T-code on the nameplate sets the maximum surface temperature.
  • Thermal protection. Winding thermostats on Class II motors of 1 HP and larger.
  • Inverter-rated versions. Use on a variable speed drive only where the nameplate shows inverter approval.

ABB Baldor-Reliance explosion proof motor FAQs

ATEX and IECEx flameproof (Ex d), non-sparking (Ex nA) and dust ignition proof (Ex tb) models are available. The standard UL/CSA Division 1 motors are certified to North American standards and are not ATEX marked. For a hazardous area on a UK or EU site, specify the ATEX version.

The ATEX flameproof (Ex d) motors are suitable for Zone 1 and Zone 2 gas atmospheres. Ex nA non-sparking motors are for Zone 2, and Ex tb motors for dust zones. The site’s hazardous area classification decides which protection type and temperature class are required.

They are the North American hazardous location system. Class I covers gases and vapours, Class II combustible dusts. Division 1 means the hazard can be present in normal operation; Division 2 only under abnormal conditions. Groups narrow it to the specific substance, such as Group D for propane-type gases.

The temperature code shows the maximum surface temperature the motor can reach, from T1 (450°C) to T6 (85°C). It must be below the ignition temperature of the gas or dust present. Many ABB Baldor-Reliance Division 1 motors are marked T3C (160°C).

Only where it is rated for it. Many three phase models are approved for drive use, and the nameplate states the approval and any speed limits. A motor without that marking must not be run on a drive in a hazardous area.

A drill rig duty motor is an explosion proof motor built for on and offshore drilling equipment. ABB Baldor-Reliance drill rig motors are listed for Class I Groups C and D, including areas where hydrogen sulphide is present, with a 1.15 service factor.

Both are ABB NEMA motors. ABB Baldor-Reliance explosion proof motors come from Baldor Electric Company, acquired by ABB in 2011. The ABB-branded explosion proof range comes from the NEMA motor business ABB acquired in 2023. See ABB NEMA explosion proof motors for that range.
