Clean-Geartech VFD Series Aluminium Worm Gearboxes

Smooth-bodied aluminium worm gearboxes for washdown areas near the product line, where a painted, finned gearbox would trap dirt and corrode.

5 sizes · 21-347Nm · 0.06-4.0kW · ø14-35mm hollow bore · 3 finishes

The VFD Series is the entry point to the Clean-Geartech hygienic gearbox range. Its one-piece aluminium housing has smooth, rib-free surfaces that rinse clean, and it comes unpainted, with a protective coating or with a white protective paint to suit how often and how hard the line is washed.

VFD Series overview

The VFD housing is a single-piece aluminium alloy casting, vacuum impregnated to MIL-STD-276, with sealed holes, sealed oil plugs and no plastic plugs. Because the body is smooth, dust and product residue have nowhere to build up, and the housing can be hosed or wiped down quickly.

Three finishes cover different cleaning regimes. The standard version is smooth unpainted aluminium for basic cleaning. The NTT version adds a protective coating for water-based washdown. The painted version has a white two-component polyurethane paint (RAL 7035) for more aggressive environments such as marine sites: in Clean-Geartech’s neutral salt spray testing, unpainted aluminium began to corrode after about 100 hours, while the painted housing showed no corrosion after 1,200 hours.

Five sizes from D30 to D85 cover 21Nm to 347Nm, with ratios from 5:1 to 102:1. The standard hollow output shaft can be swapped for an AISI 316L stainless steel shaft, and twin Viton seals give IP69K protection. The casing dimensions match the VFN Series stainless steel gearbox, so a VFD can be upgraded to full stainless later without changing the mounting. The natural motor partner is the APM Series smooth aluminium motor.

Features and benefits

  • Smooth, single-piece aluminium housing – no fins or ribs to trap dirt; vacuum impregnated to MIL-STD-276.
  • Three finishes – standard unpainted, NTT protective coating, or white protective paint for medium-aggressive environments.
  • Hollow output in cast iron or AISI 316L stainless steel – choose stainless where the bore is exposed to washdown.
  • Seal options to suit the wash – NBR as standard, a single Viton seal for harsh environments, or twin Viton seals with a 316L shield for IP69K.
  • Nickel bronze worm wheel (CuSn12Ni) – centrifugally cast for strength and long life.
  • Hardened and ground worm – radiused teeth for quieter running.
  • Premium input coupling – direct motor mounting with no settings and no screws.
  • Dimensionally interchangeable – the casing matches the VFN stainless steel series and several common standard worm gearboxes.
  • Long-life synthetic oil – with food grade oil available on request.

VFD Series FAQs

It depends on the clean-down. The standard unpainted finish suits dry areas and basic cleaning. The NTT coating is for regular water-based washdown. The white painted finish is for more corrosive conditions, such as salt air on marine sites. If the wash the line with aggressive acid or alkaline detergents, step up to the stainless steel VFN Series instead.

Often, yes. The VFD casing is dimensionally interchangeable with several common standard worm gearbox brands, so a corroding painted unit can frequently be swapped without re-engineering the mounting. Send us the make, model and ratio and we will check the fit.

It is IP66 as standard. With twin Viton seals and a 316L stainless steel shield it reaches IP69K, the rating for close-range high-pressure (100 bar), high-temperature (80°C) washdown.

Yes. The standard hollow shaft is cast iron, and an AISI 316L stainless steel hollow shaft is available in every standard bore size.

The casings share the same dimensions, but the VFD is aluminium and the VFN is AISI 316L stainless steel. The VFD costs less and suits basic and water-based cleaning; the VFN is for direct product contact and aggressive chemical clean-downs.

The APM Series smooth aluminium motor, which has the same rib-free design and is IP69K rated. Read more on the advantages of hygienic motors in manufacturing.
