Motovario logo

Motovario’s motovariators change output speed mechanically while the motor runs at a constant speed. The compact aluminium TXF Series covers motors up to 2.2kW and the cast iron S Series up to 7.5kW. Both can be combined with Motovario helical and worm gearboxes for lower output speeds.

VAR Series overview

A Motovario variator uses planet discs running between two inner races on the motor shaft and two outer races fixed to the casing. Turning the handwheel moves one outer race through a cam ring, which changes the radius at which the planets run and so the speed of the planet carrier on the output shaft. Speed is adjusted smoothly, with the unit running, to a sensitivity of 0.5rpm, over a range of roughly 5:1: with a 4 pole motor, about 1000 down to 190rpm on the S Series. Slip at maximum load is 5%.

The TXF Series comes in three sizes, TXF002, TXF005 and TXF010, with die-cast aluminium casings, for motors up to 2.2kW and output torque up to 12Nm at minimum speed. The S Series comes in seven sizes, S003 to S100, with G200 grey cast iron casings, for motors up to 7.5kW and output torque up to 144Nm. S versions include flanged (SF) and foot mounted units, motorised and input shaft versions, and the SD with an epicyclic differential that takes the output speed down to zero. Shafts are 20MnCr5 steel and internal parts 100Cr6.

For lower output speeds and higher torque, the variators combine with Motovario helical gear reducers (VH cast iron, with motors up to 15kW; VHA aluminium, up to 2.2kW) and NMRV worm gearboxes (SF+NMRV up to 7.5kW; TXF+NMRV up to 1.5kW), with output torque up to 5,000Nm. An electrical servocontrol is available as an option. ATEX versions are available in categories 2GD and 3GD.

Features and benefits

  • Mechanical speed control – no electronics, suited to harsh conditions and remote sites.
  • Stepless adjustment by handwheel – over a speed range of roughly 5:1, with 0.5rpm sensitivity and the handwheel on either side.
  • TXF Series – three compact die-cast aluminium sizes for motors up to 2.2kW.
  • S Series – seven G200 cast iron sizes for motors up to 7.5kW and output torque up to 144Nm.
  • Zero-speed option – SD version with epicyclic differential, from maximum speed down to 0rpm.
  • Electrical servocontrol option – as an alternative to the handwheel.
  • Combines with gear reducers – VH and VHA helical and NMRV worm combinations, up to 5,000Nm.
  • ATEX versions – categories 2GD and 3GD.

ABB GP100 FAQs

The frame. The GP100 has a cast iron frame and covers 1–200 HP in NEMA frames 143T–449T. The GP100A has an aluminium frame and end shields and covers 1–20 HP in frames 143T–256T. Both are TEFC, NEMA Premium® efficient and suitable for inverter use. Choose the GP100A where weight matters and the GP100 for larger ratings or heavier duty.

It is the same product line. ABB acquired the Siemens low voltage NEMA motor business in 2023, and the GP100 continues under the ABB name from the same Guadalajara plant, with 1LE2 part numbers. Ratings and dimensions can change between generations, so check the current datasheet against the part number on the original nameplate.

Yes. GP100 and GP100A motors are suitable for inverter use to NEMA MG1 Part 31.4.4.2. They give a 20:1 speed range on variable torque loads such as fans and centrifugal pumps, and 4:1 on constant torque loads such as conveyors. If you need full torque at lower speeds, the severe duty SD100 offers a 20:1 constant torque range on 4-pole motors in frames 143T–365T.

A general purpose motor suits most continuous-duty pumps, fans, compressors and conveyors in reasonably clean environments. Choose a severe duty motor where the motor faces corrosive atmospheres, heavy dust or moisture, a Division 2 hazardous area, or a specification that calls for IEEE 841. Severe duty motors also carry a longer ABB warranty: 36 months, against 18 for the GP100.

NEMA motors are designed for 60 Hz supplies. Many GP100 and GP100A ratings carry a dual 60/50 Hz nameplate, but output, speed and voltage at 50 Hz differ from the 60 Hz rating, so check the datasheet for the specific motor before installing it on a 50 Hz supply.
