ABB NEMA motors are a three-phase AC motor range built for demanding industrial and heavy process applications, from general purpose and pump motors through to severe duty, IEEE 841, explosion-proof and crusher duty motors. The range originated from the Siemens low-voltage NEMA motor business, which ABB acquired in May 2023 and subsequently reintroduced under the ABB name. Today, ABB’s NEMA range provides motor solutions built to North American NEMA standards for applications where reliable performance and durability are essential.
Betech supplies ABB NEMA motors throughout the UK and has specialised in NEMA frame motors for more than 25 years. ABB appointed Betech as its first UK authorised value provider for low-voltage NEMA motors in 2019, and we support both new machinery built for export and replacement of NEMA motors already installed in the UK. Whether you are specifying a new motor or replacing an existing Siemens or other NEMA motor, our technical team can help identify the appropriate ABB solution for the application.
Up to NEMA 449T Frame / 200HP / 2, 4, 6, 8 Pole
Cast iron and lightweight aluminium frames for standard industrial duty. The GP100A’s aluminium construction makes it the flexible choice where weight matters.
Up to NEMA 5013 Frame / 800HP / 2, 4, 6, 8 Pole
The ABB SD range is the next generation of severe duty motors, offering ruggedness, reliability, performance and efficiency. Available in IEEE 841 versions.
Up to NEMA 449T Frame / 200HP / 2, 4, 6 Pole
Vertical P-base motors delivering high thrust in a compact form for deep well and turbine pump systems, plus horizontal pump systems for general fluid handling.
Up to NEMA [frame] / [HP] / [pole counts]
Built for the toughest jobs, XP100 motors feature an explosion proof design that gives peace of mind in hazardous gas and dust environments.
If you have a Siemens NEMA motor that is no longer available, we can identify the current ABB equivalent. ABB acquired Siemens’ low voltage NEMA motor business in 2023 and reintroduced the general purpose and severe duty ranges under the ABB name.
Replacing a NEMA motor isn’t simply a case of matching horsepower. The replacement should be checked against frame size, power, speed, voltage, frequency, mounting arrangement, shaft dimensions, enclosure, duty and operating environment.
The quickest way for us to identify the right replacement is the part code and serial number from the original Siemens nameplate. Those let our technical team establish the original specification and match it to the current ABB motor. A photograph of the nameplate is usually all we need to get started.
Typical applications
ABB NEMA motors are built for applications where downtime is not an option and the operating environment is hard on equipment.
ABB Vertical P Base motors are designed to deliver high thrust performance in a compact, space saving form, ideal for deep well and turbine pump systems.
Chemical plants rely on precise processes, trust in safety and highest possible performance. ABB NEMA motors are ready to meet these demands.
ABB NEMA Motors provide energy efficient, cost effective solutions to those posed by water treatment and distribution applications
ABB’s Motion business includes a broad portfolio of industrial electric motors and drives. Its NEMA portfolio runs two ranges, and the difference between them is heritage.
ABB NEMA Motors – this range – came from the Siemens low voltage NEMA motor business, which ABB acquired in 2023. It’s three-phase AC, built for heavy process industry.
ABB Baldor-Reliance builds on the Baldor motor brand, which ABB acquired in 2011, and is built in ABB’s US manufacturing facilities. It’s the broader of the two, covering single phase as well as three phase, plus DC, washdown duty, variable speed and EC Titanium.
Betech supplies both. The right choice depends on the specification, frame size, duty, environment and application – talk to our technical team and we’ll work from your existing motor details or the application requirements.
Stock in the UK: We hold a large range of NEMA motors at Heckmondwike, West Yorkshire, with same day despatch on stock items ordered before the cut off time.
Non-stock lead times: Lead times vary by product. Where its urgent, we can airfreight from US stock – talk to our sales team.
NEMA frame specialists. Our ABB appointment covers the low voltage NEMA range, and we supply both ABB NEMA lines. If your application calls for an IEC-frame motor instead, we stock those too.
Breakdown cover. If a line is down, call us. We quote in minutes, not days.

ABB acquired the Siemens low voltage NEMA motor business on 4 May 2023 and reintroduced the range under the ABB brand the same year. If your drawing specifies a Siemens NEMA motor, send us the part number and we’ll identify the ABB equivalent.
Both are ABB NEMA motors, built to the same North American standards. The difference is heritage: the ABB range came from the Siemens low voltage NEMA motor business, acquired in 2023, while ABB Baldor-Reliance builds on Baldor Electric Company, acquired in 2011 and built in ABB’s US facilities. The ABB range is three-phase AC for heavy process industry; ABB Baldor-Reliance is broader, adding single phase, DC, washdown duty and variable speed. We supply both.
Yes. We keep a wide range of NEMA motors in stock at our Heckmondwike facility in West Yorkshire, with same-day despatch on stock items. Tell us the frame, rating and duty and we’ll confirm availability while you’re on the phone.
Yes. The XP100 is ABB’s explosion proof NEMA motor, and the SD661 meets API 661 for air-cooled heat exchanger duty. Tell us the area classification and we’ll confirm what’s suitable.
IEEE 841 is the petroleum and chemical industry standard for severe duty induction motors, setting requirements for vibration, bearing life, temperature rise and enclosure integrity. ABB’s SD100 and SD200 are both available in IEEE 841 versions.
NEMA is the North American standard – imperial frame dimensions, horsepower ratings and NEMA design letters. IEC is the European standard – metric dimensions, kW ratings and IE efficiency classes. The mountings are not interchangeable, so one generally cannot replace the other without modifying the baseplate and coupling.
Our ABB appointment covers the NEMA frame range, under both the ABB and ABB Baldor-Reliance names. We do stock IEC-frame motors – see our IEC frame motor range.
ABB sells its low voltage motor range through authorised distributors rather than direct. For the NEMA range in the UK, that route is Betech.
The nameplate carries the frame size, HP rating, NEMA design letter, service factor and nominal efficiency. We’ve written a full guide: How to Read a NEMA Motor Nameplate.
